Performance Notes
The five note theme this work is based on starts on is as follows: a1 (minim/half note) - a2 (dotted crotchet/dotted quarter note) - e1 d2 (semiquavers/sixteenth notes) - e2 (tied over minim and quaver/half and eight note) The work has five movements, and here are some of the variations: - stopped - expanded with added on lyrical theme - transposed - in canon - muted - rhythmically varied - condensed (note values: base of 2nd movement) - augmented (note values: base of 3rd movement) - inverted Most of the variations are easy to hear, and this gives the work its cohesion. The harmonic language is varied, depending on how the lines fall. While the theme is built on standard harmonies (in its original form A major or minor), the accompanying figures are often a semitone away (B flat major chord, for example). The works ends with a cluster chord (A, eb, c1, d1, g1, bb1, d2, eb2), and this is in line with much of the rest of the piece.
