Performance Notes
Meditation is based on the Dorian mode starting on A (a-b-c-d-e-f#-g), that is why there is a sharp in the key (for those that were wondering what one sharp has to do with A). It is a fascinating mode, and makes this piece stand apart from most other compositions (based on classical, romantic, or contemporary harmony). The eight horns are divided into two sections, with the first introducing the initially ambiguous tonality (it could be A minor). Once the ear gets used to the different sound world, section 2 comes in and expands on the harmonies, only to be joined by the first four horns to work towards the first climax of the piece. Similar thematic structures keep repeating in the same fashion until the end, where all players join on an open A chord (without the 3rd). This is a different sounding work for eight horns, written for Horn Sunday, July 13, 1997, at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. It comes recommended to all ensembles wanting to expand their repertoire.
