Performance Notes
Cor by four! Book III - Dances of the British Isles is the third instalment in Lynsdale-Nock's series of easy quartets. Most of the works in this volume follow the standard pattern of 8-bar (repeated) sections, with the theme in horn 1 (usually 4 bars long), and the repetition in horn 3. The distribution of parts follows the standard orchestral setup (1-3-2-4). It seems that most of the works were arranged from scores in C, as all but two pieces are in C major / A minor (G major / E minor horn pitch). The remaining two works are in A flat major (E flat major horn pitch) and G major (D major horn pitch). While this makes them slightly uncomfortable for transposition, it limits the range nicely, and therefore makes them ideal for beginners. The selection of works is interesting, with an obvious focus on music from the British Isles, but varied in tempo and with enough differences in style to not get boring. The individual parts are easy, but not too easy, and at the same time not too difficult, so the quartets can equally well be used as a teaching base, rather than just a simple play through. The presentation, as with all Corniworld publications, is smart, and the price / value ratio excellent, so for beginner's ensembles this is a publication wel worth looking into.
