Creator's Comments
Conical diatonics was designed to not only challenge the player's ability to be aware of the many qualities and sounds of the horn, but to also provide a bit of humor in the playing of the piece. Some of these ideas are described within the music, but are not necessarily meant to be used if the instructor or leader proveides otherwise. On the other hand, humor can no doubt be provided in other ways, and one is free to fashion whatever bits of amusement that he or she feels is in good taste.
Performance Notes
Conical diatonics contains several recurring elements, including scale-patterns, open-to-stopped-to-open, syncopated rhythms, flatterzunge, fiber mutes, trills, and last, but not least, some instructions for humorous interludes by the 5th horn player. Unfortunately this is another edition with a score in sounding pitch, which makes it hard to get a good feeling for it visually. As an example, large parts of the score are in bass clef, while the parts are in treble, and the range looks deceivingly different. Nevertheless, the work in itself is definitely worth giving a try.
