Performance Notes
Barbara Allen is a work for 4 horns, that was later re-arranged for octet by Kerry Turner as heard on the AHQ and the horns of the NY Philharmonic CD, Take 9. It is divided into two main sections, the opening moderato, and an allegro that takes up most of the work. Unlike most other Turner compositions / arrangements, this work is accessible for intermediate quartets, even tough there are still challenges to be overcome. The allegro requires extended double tonguing, facility in playing arpeggio, hand stopping, some forays into the high range, quick mute changes and very quiet (pp) dynamics. Despite all of this, the range and technical demands are somewhat limited, so either the quartet or octet version is a great way to approach Turner’s works at the beginning, to then move on to something of his that’s more challenging.
