Performance Notes
Bill Evan's Waltz for Debby is another jazz standard written in 1956 (like Nica's dream), and has subsequently been recorded and re-arranged many times. "Debby"refers to Evan's niece, Debby Evans.
The standard Meyer instrumentation applies (read about other Dick Meyer arrangements for more information). While the work is technically not very challenging, it is in a "medium jazz waltz" tempo (crotchet [quarter note] equals 150), and very few of the melodic lines start on the downbeat. Most of the parts progress by step or arpeggio, and there is little rhythmic work. The parts are similarly linked as in Meyer's other arrangements, so again the purchasing decision depends on whether the ensemble wants to add the piece to the repertoire or not.
