Performance Notes
Wiggins’ Three solitudes are studies in tone colours, with extreme dynamics (ffff) and extreme range (d3) used. As the title implies they are three slow pieces, mainly with simple rhythms, and several time changes (that don’t have much of an audible effect though). Mutes as well as hand stopping add to the colour play, and the high notes often have to be pitched without much of an approach beforehand. It’s an effective piece, but borderline very difficult to play.
