Performance Notes
Paul Basler’s Three pieces are tonal settings in the style of their respective titles. “Celebration” is a not too quick fanfare-like opening, with am alternation of loud, bold and quiet, lyrical passages. The 2nd movement is a predominantly homo-rhythmic chorale, with more advanced harmonic writing than the first. The final movement, “Psalm”, is again chorale-like, with more rhythmic variation though, mainly in the first part. The harmonic language is tonal throughout, and with the range and tempi limited, this is a work accessible to most horn quartets.
