Creator's Comments
This setting of the 16th century English folk song, “Scarborough fair”, was done by Mr. Teuber for his students at the University of South Carolina. At present he is professor of theory and composition at the same school. Special attention should be paid to te balance from measure 23 to measure 38 so that the eigth-notes do not cover the melody a it shifts from voice to voice.
Performance Notes
Scarborough fair, a 16th century ballad, has most famously been recorded by Simon & Garfunkel, and Sarah Brightman. Teuber’s setting is a beautiful orchestration in D minor / major (with a few other keys in between). The parts are distributed like a standard orchestral section (1-3-2-4), and even though it is short, everybody gets something to play. The difficulty level is easy with a challenge, as there are a few runs, and some meter changes. All the lines are beautifully done though, at times in 4-part counterpoint, which seems to impress audiences, besides the natural appeal of the tune.
