Performance Notes
This arrangement of Sibelius’ Romance, from the 10 pieces for piano op.24 is, as would be expected, slightly different from the original version. For one, it is a different key (D major instead of D flat major), making it considerably easier on the fingers (1# instead of 4b). It is also a lot more condensed range-wise, with several octave displacements, which on occasion even invert the lines as they were represented in the original. Nevertheless, this arrangement works well, despite the odd insistence on playing everything legato (as opposed to the juxtaposition of legato and accented sections in the original). In a way this is in line with the omission of the cadenza, therefore making Walshe’s version a pure Romance, rather than a pianistic showpiece. The score and parts are hand written, with clear signs of corrections and other editing. If transferred into a better format, this arrangement would be a good addition to the horn quartet repertoire.
