Performance Notes
Martinet arranges Schubert’s Nachtgesang im Walde op.139b D913 for two quartets, with the top four representing the choir, and the lower four the horns. Schubert uses the original horns as an echo, and this is visible in Martinet’s score, with a contrasting f and p in the opening section. There are many such imitatory gestures throughout the work. The harmonies are typically Schubertian, who was at his best when writing songs (and this shows here).
