Performance Notes
Ernesto Lecuona y Casado (1895-1964) was a Cuban composer and pianist, both professions he excelled at. Malaguena was originally part of the Suite Andalucia, next to Cordoba, Andaluza, Alhambra, Gitanerias and Guadalquivir. It has since become a standard in a variety of styles, and has been arranged in various ways. The parts are distributed in Meyer's standard pairs (1+2, 3+4, etc.), descending in tessitura as the numbers ascend. What puts this work apart from most of his others is the high first horn part, playing mainly g2 and higher. The other horns are the usual medium difficulty, which makes Malaguena accessible to intermediate ensembles with a strong high player.
