Performance Notes
Lohengrin was first performed in 1850 at the Staatskapelle Weimar, directed by Franz Liszt, and was an immediate success. It is scored for full symphony orchestra with extra winds as well as offstage parts, and has a story that needs more than a few paragraphs to summarise. This arrangement effectively reproduces the main voices of the selection, The king’s prayer, in a way that is accessible to most beginner’s quartets, with perhaps a more advanced 4th horn player, as the part is notated in bass clef and goes considerably low.
