Performance Notes
Fred Malige is a little known German violinist and composer, born in 1895 with an output comprising orchestral, chamber, vocal music, and military songs and marches. This horn quartet no.2 is based on famous hunting signals, in a line with Rossini’s Rendez-vous de chasse and Weber’s Hunter’s choir from Der Freischutz.
There is little else to say about the piece. Most of it is in the customary 6/8, with perhaps an interesting, slow 2nd movement (using mutes). There are no real surprises, and if that is what you are after, look no further.
