Performance Notes
One of the few expansions on am original work, Paul Painter and Tom Seymour’s paraphrase on Handel’s work still contains all the elements of a fugue, with the motif presentation, imitation, recapitulation, and whatever else one can remember from theory class. The key is convenient (F major), and all parts are treated equally – with the usual difference in range. As is usual with older quintet music, the 2nd horn assumes the role of a 3rd orchestral horn (and the equivalent happens to the 3rd part). With a number of other fugues available for the same combination, this one has to be heard in order to form an opinion, which is difficult as printing as been discontinued.
