Creator's Comments
Frederic Duvernoy was born October 16, 1765 in Montbeliard, France, and died July 19, 1838 in Paris. He was one of the most famous horn virtuosos (French horn) of his day; serving as first horn in the Grand Opera of Paris (1796-1817) and as professor of horn at the Paris Conservatory until 1815. The great artist and teacher has also gone down in history as a prolific composer for his instrument, having written etudes, sonatas, trios and quintets (for horn and strings), and many concertos. As there is still a great lack of literature for the horn, the publisher is pleased to be able to present these charming trios to instrumentalists and to the public. Having served many years as horn soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the “Dresdner Staatsoper” and having been professor of horn at the music academies in Dresden, Breslau and Tokio, he is convinced of the instructive value of these trios and is, furthermore, certain of the pleasure that these works will bring to all hornists. Stuttgart, Autumn 1963 Max Zimolong
Performance Notes
These are four trios by Duvernoy, written to be playable on the natural horn. The key is not specified, so any transposition may be chosen (the range indications above are for horn in F). These trios are not as exciting as the (good) Gallay ones, but are more interesting to play than the Duvernoy duets, and definitely worth checking out.
