- One of the lesser known Baroque flute concertos, this work by the Bohemian composer Franz Benda (1709-1786) has been arranged for solo horn (playing the flute part), and horn quartet. The solo part is surprisingly accessible, which is partly due to the transposition of the work into a more suited key (D minor instead of E minor). In addition, the original flute part is already rather melodic and mainly contains scales and arpeggios within a reasonable range. The embellishments of the rather sparse published sheet music were taken from Mikael Helasvuo’s recording on BIS (CD-268), with minor simplifications in several tricky technical passages. As with most of my arrangements, no compromises have been made when transcribing the orchestral accompaniment (comprising strings and a harpsichord). Fast semi-quaver (sixteenth note) passages, one octave-and-a-half leaps, a bass-line in the fourth horn that never stops – to say these parts are challenging is an understatement. While technically the easiest part, the fourth horn needs fast and clean attacks down into the deep pedal register (pedal E), and there are even a couple of pedal C’s. When it is all put together though, the arrangement is very effective and quite impressive from a technical point of view. Some people have questioned the quality of the work itself, but given that this particular arrangement and a recording are available for free, it is an interesting piece to check out.
