Elegy is a work with both tonal and bi-tonal parts, with horns 1 & 2 providing the main melody, horns 5 & 6 the counter-melody, horns 3 & 4 the accompaniment figure, and horns 7 & 8 the bass. Enclosed by the main theme (at the beginning and the end) is a “meno mosso” section built on a tone clash (bb1 and c2), an ascending legato figure, and a muted solo in the first horn.
